+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ ***Heartworm Treatment: During treatment and for several weeks afterward, your dog’s activity level must be limited. Fragments of dead worms can block blood flow through pulmonary vessels and worsen the inflammatory response; too much exercise increases blood flow to blocked areas, causing capillaries to rupture as the body tries to pump blood through the blocked vessels. This heightens the likelihood of complications, such as coughing, breathing difficulties and sudden death. Because of this, a highly active dog with only a small number of heartworms is more likely to develop severe heartworm disease-associated signs than a dog with many heartworms who’s a couch potato. To reduce the risk of complications, it’s essential that you restrict exercise for the entire time your dog is undergoing treatment and for a period of time afterward. Depending on the severity of the damage caused by the heartworms, this can mean complete confinement in a crate except for potty walks on leash or minimal activity in the home, with only brief walks on leash and crating when no one is there to monitor his activity and make sure he remains calm. Your veterinarian will let you know when your dog can resume normal activity levels. http://www.vetstreet.com/dr-marty-becker/heartworm-treatment-for-dogs-what-you-need-to-know?page=2 ***Writeup: Whitney: Hi!! My name is Whitney and I need a home. My former home has small grandkids now and I guess I'm too big. But I love kids. They are my happy place. I am lucky I got rescued . I wasn't given the vet care that every pet deserves and it turns out I have Heartworm-the rescue is helping me overcome it. . The rescue has taken care of all my medical needs and will provide the treatment for the heartworm, but I could really use a home now and especially when I start treatment, it would be nice to have a place to recuperate. I'm sweet, funny, active and smart, however it's been said I could do with some manners. That shouldn't be hard because I'm very eager to please. I'm good in the house, like everyone, and love to play. I enjoy going by by and am well behaved in the car. There's so much to love about me, I could go on and on, but come on up and meet me and judge for yourself. I will make a great addition to an active family that has time to spend with me and I would really like to have kids to play with. If you can't adopt, how about being my foster. I have to stay in a kennel right now and really miss having a family. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ We show most of our adoptable pets at PetSmart, Utica, each Saturday from 11 to 3.
